In a world where the simple act of choosing what to wear is not a given for many, the freedom to express ourselves through our clothing is a privilege that should never be taken for granted. As women in the United States, we have the freedom to decide how we want to present ourselves to the world. This freedom is a profound testament to the rights we hold, and it's a privilege that many women around the globe do not enjoy.
The recent laws in Afghanistan, mandating the covering of women's faces and silencing their voices in public, are a stark reminder of the oppressive restrictions placed on women in various parts of the world. In countries like Iran and Afghanistan, and in at least 60 others, women are subject to laws that dictate their religious dress, often with little regard for personal choice. These regulations are not a reflection of individual belief or preference but are imposed by authorities, stripping women of their autonomy and self-expression.
I have immense respect for religious dress practices when they are chosen freely and with intention. However, the reality that so many women are denied the choice is deeply troubling. It is in this context that I find myself particularly grateful to live in the United States, where I can decide how I want to dress, and where my choices are respected.
This appreciation for freedom and autonomy is at the heart of NANDANIE, my line of ties designed for women. The tie, traditionally a symbol of male authority and professionalism, takes on new meaning when worn by women. It becomes a statement of empowerment, a declaration that we, too, can suit up and take on the world in our own way.
Designing ties for women is more than just creating a fashion accessory—it's about celebrating the freedom we have to express ourselves. Every tie we knot is a reminder of the autonomy we enjoy and the power we have to present ourselves on our own terms. We are fortunate to live in a time and place where we can embrace both femininity and strength through our clothing, and for that, I am deeply appreciative.
